The research was conducted by www.RussiaWrestling.com. The research team gathered information of all the best freestyle wrestlers around the world from 1951 to present day and integrated the special scale system to determine and create the Pound-for-Pound Rankings.
The pound-for-pound rating is based on the results that wrestlers showed from 1951 and up. Only wrestlers who won at least one gold medal either at the Olympic Games or World Championship and scored total 2 rating points were included in the list of top 70 pound for pound wrestlers in the world. Many great wrestlers who won just one world title were not included in the list due to the insufficient required rating points (in the near future the comprehensive list of all top wrestlers may be generated where all wrestlers can be included).
Based on the research the 3x Olympic Champion, 7x World Champion Alexander Medved (USSR) is the pound-for-pound the best wrestler in the world leading the way with 19.25 points, leaving behind the two other unique wrestlers who were also able to win three Gold Olympic medals – Buvaisar Saitiev (RUS) with total 18 point – 2nd best place and Artur Taymazov (UZB) – 15.25 points – 3rd place.
Khadzhimurat Gatsalov (RUS) and Jordan Burroughs (USA) are the only two active wrestlers who can make a change in the top 20 pound-for-pound ranking this year. These two can make a change in the top 20 list in the near future if they will be competing and placing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Currently, Khadzhimurat Gatsalov is 13th with 9.25 points and Jordan Burroughs is 21th with 7.05 points, winning the Rio 2016 gold will move them to 6th and 11th positions respectively.
3x World Champion Bilyal Makhov (RUS) can also get into the top 20 list if he will win the gold at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio, right now he is on the 54th position with 3.65 ranking points.
