In the interview the two time Olympic Champion Roman Vlasov said that the competition there was more than wrestling, it was a battle of the gladiators. He also shared some thoughts and memories from the tournament.

Roman Vlasov– We came here to win the title. We prepared well and we were confident about winning the championship.
– The quality of the duals shows the high level of the tournament. We had a good team and the atmosphere in the hall and the organization of the World Cup was very interesting. I love Iran and the Iranian fans. The Iranian legend Hamid SORYAN is one of my best friends.

Gift from the Iranian fan

“One of the most touching moments of the World Cup for me took place after the awarding ceremony,” said Roman Vlasov, “We left the hall and were heading to the bus, when am Iranian fan broke through the fence, took off his ring and presented it to me. We spoke a little bit in English, he expressed “respect”, said that he loves the wrestling and the he is rooting for me. The Iranians call me not Vlasov but Velasov, and Gogi Murmanovich (the Russia Greco-Roman Wrestling head coach) started to tease me by, calling Velasov. (Smiles) I always go to Iran with a great pleasure.

The fans make the most of every opportunity to not just to talk to you, but to touch you. In Russia I have never seen something like that. When I went into the bus, I went to the front door and threw a T-shirt into the crow… Davit Chakvetadze (Olympic Champion 2016) threw a T-shirt as well through the hatch. The Iranians fought for it a real battle, literally fought. It was both strange, and surprising, and very pleasant “

The most difficult moment

“Everyone is a hero, but I’ll especially sing point out Sergei Semenov. That happened with Iran and with Azerbaijan, his victories were decisive.” When Serega got off the wrestling mat, he just fell down. Everyone began to congratulate him, to hug him – he brought a lot of happiness to us. For a long time I did not see our head coach to be so happy – Gogi Murmanovich said that winning the World Cup was both his dream and his goal. It’s always hard to watch him how he worries for us – Gogi Murmanovich is a great coach and we are very happy that did not disappoint him and confirmed that he is the coach of the strongest team in the world “
