ISTANBUL (May 7) – Valeria Koblova from Russia is a London 2012 Olympian who returned to action this weekend to use the last chance to earn a Rio 2016 license for Russia at the “last chance” Olympic Games world wrestling qualifying tournament in Istanbul.
Former world silver medalist Valeria Koblova racked up four wins, including a pair of technical falls, to win the last world wrestling qualifying tournament and qualify her weight category for Russia at 58kg, while showing no after-effects of the knee injury that knocked her out of last summer’s European Games.
Kobolova’s Russia Wrestling teammate Ekaterina Bukina had also won four matches with two technical falls, to win the tournament and book a berth at 75kg, giving Russia its fifth ticket to the women’s events at Rio 2016.
Unfortunately, Irina Ologonova (RUS) at 53kg fell short and missed the last chance to secure a spot for Russia Wrestling Team at this weight category. Russia now heads to the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio with 17 of a possible 18 qualification licenses in the wrestling competition.
