Dzhambulat Tedeev: Young Russia Wrestling team will return from Iran stronger and more confident

"Our competitors do not have such a strong reserve, as we have ..."

Russia wrestling national team took the fifth place at the World Cup 2017 that ended in Iran. The results of the performance of Russia wrestling team were summarized by the head coach Dzhambulat Tedeev in the interview to correspondent Tigran Avanyan.

The Russian national team took the fifth place at the World Cup, though our Russian wrestlers had all chances to perform better, – said Dzhambulat Tedeev.

– First of all, I would like to thank all our fans for their support. It is clear that we have not presented a wave of positive emotions today, but we made the first steps in the new Olympic cycle so we can hear Russian national anthem in Tokyo in 2020. At the World Cup the first match meeting against Azerbaijan team has become a key meeting, which we lost with the score 4:4 on additional indicators. Coming to the last match, it was important not to lose by a whisker but win, and then it would be all right. But it turned out how it was. I was surprised by the defeat of Dzhamal Otarsultanov who during the last few years was struggling more with his injuries rather than his rivals. All our guys have already started at the Yariguin Grand Prix 2017 and for Jamal the start in Iran was the first in the season. When an athlete does not go out to the mat – it has an impact. In the wrestling it is important to have a competition atmosphere feel. And at the World Cup teams like Iran, USA and Azerbaijan are always presented with the top wrestlers at their national teams…

– Why Russia Wrestling did not presented stronger top athletes at their world cup team?

– You see, our competitors do not have such a strong reserve, as we have. They do not even always have in the national team a second number. So they set goals to win. We choose to go another way: we are taking third and fourth number athletes to the World Cup to let these guys to collect experience, to get stronger, so they could compose a real internal competition to the first and second numbers of our team.
This is important not only for wrestlers but also for coaches – so that we could form a portrait of these wrestlers. When they will have a chance again to test themselves against the main foreign rivals…? With those who will be their opponents in the competition for a medal at the world championships? The World Cup has shown that Olympic champions from other countries are no better than other wrestlers. Judge for yourself – the winners of the Games of different years Sharif Sharifov (Azerbaijan), Hassan Yazdanishariati (Iran) and Kyle Snyder (United States) have lost at the World Cup. And even Jordan Burroughs (USA) did not show anything special.

– Why you have not included in the roster any winner of Yariguin 2017 tournament? For example, for Ahmed Gadzhimagomedov it would be useful to wrestle with Jordan Burroughs …

– To wrestle with Burroughs at the World Cup and at the World Championships are not the same thing. At the moment, all winners of Yariguin tournament are favorites in the team and have high chances to wrestle at the European Championship 2017, but young and inexperienced wrestlers will also be tested in one of the upcoming international tournaments. This will be a certain stage, after which they will begin a targeted training for the European Championships. If you are in your career have not won anything up to date except for Yariguin tournament- you need to be tested. And after that all decisions will be made.

– In the light heavy weight an Olympic champion Kyle Snyder from the USA won Yariguin tournament, and Rasul Magomedov became the second. At the World Cup he won three matches …

– Rasul – yesterday’s junior, and he is one of the contenders for trip to Europe, but specifically it is too early to talk about that. At the World Cup he showed a competent wrestling.

– The World Cup has become the first major tournament not only for the reserve of Russia wrestling team, but also for the yesterday wrestlers, who nowadays have become a part of the coaching staff. Were there any mistakes in their actions?

– Of course, there were mistakes. But people learn from mistakes. Experience of the wrestler and experience of the coach – are two different things. I would like first to talk about wrestlers’ mistakes.

You have to understand the fundamental difference between individual and team tournament. In the individual tournament it does not matter, whether you won 10:0, 11:1, 1:0 or 2:2 or for the last action. And in the team tournament it is important to keep track of your score because it is a big difference between the two scores 3:0 and 3:1. This is not an individual tournament and those things when you giving up 2 points at the end of the match while previously leading the match 6:0 can hurt the final team score at the end. Such mistakes on the mat, that could have been avoided, may result in defeat if the dual meet will end with the score 4:4. At these tournaments, you need to think first about the team. If someone at the dual meet with the Azerbaijanis did not miss a single point – the situation would be quite different. Yes, there is a lot of work to do, and not only for wrestlers, but also for coaches. Yesterday wrestlers have entered the coaching staff, including world champion Abdusalam Gadisov, three time Olympic Games medalist Hetag Gazyumov to convey their experiences to young athletes. The infusion of fresh blood will have a positive impact on the national team. But do not forget that Abdusalam and Hetag are only at the beginning of their coaching careers.

– Iran – is a wrestling country with a special excitement at the arena stages. Did young Russian wrestlers cope with the pressure?

– Everyone knows what is it to wrestle in Iran, everyone can see how the public support their wrestlers there. All wrestling fans from all over the world should learn from Iranian fans, and not only wrestling fans. I do not think wrestling arena stages have somehow affected psychologically on any of our wrestlers at the World Cup, however we did not wrestle with the Iranians. For any young wrestler it is extremely important to compete in Iran, to gain competitive experience in such conditions, but still we are not the football players – I do not think that the Russia Wrestling national team can be broken by the roar of the crowd. Nevertheless, the reserve of the Russia wrestling team will come back stronger and more confident from Iran.
